4 Activities for Seniors with Mobility Challenges

As we get older, many of us experience a loss of mobility. This can occur due to stroke, arthritis, injury, or just a natural consequence of stiffening joints with aging. However, just because you are struggling with mobility challenges doesn’t mean you need to stay confined to a recliner at home! Check out these 4 activities for seniors with mobility challenges and start having fun today.

Chess or Other Board/Card Games

Games are great for those with mobility challenges. Board or card games usually don’t require a lot of movement, can be done seated, and best of all, they promote socializing! Most games can be played outside as well as indoors, which can add extra fun when the weather is nice. Many seniors enjoy the game of chess, but games that require a lot of strategy can be challenging for those who have dementia. Simpler games like Monopoly, Battleship, Yahtzee, backgammon, Sorry! and others like these are a great pick for seniors struggling with both mobility and memory loss or cognitive decline.

Video Games

While video games can seem like a “kid” thing, there are actually numerous benefits of video games for seniors. Simple games like Angry Birds or Kart Rider have even been shown to have benefits for dementia patients. Video games are a good social activity to reduce and prevent loneliness. They can stimulate creativity and problem-solving, improve memory, and help with reflexes and dexterity. They are also just plain fun! Some good video games for seniors to try include Wii Sports (if you can stand comfortably and swing a remote), Guitar Hero (great for seniors who love music!), Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros, World of Warcraft, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Pottery

Drawing, painting, and flower arranging are all common creative activities for senior living residents, but don’t forget pottery! Getting your hands dirty and the act of creating something from nothing is both satisfying and intellectually stimulating. Learning new things is also key to cognitive health as we age.

Swimming

As the weather warms up, make sure to take advantage of any outdoor swimming pools near you. Swimming is a great activity for mobility-challenged seniors. It is a fun and gentle form of exercise, and can even relieve joint pain. Water aerobics is also a fun way to move in water. Indoor pools are a great option as well, but swimming or exercising outside has additional mental health benefits, as well as being a great source of Vitamin D! Just make sure to wear waterproof sunscreen, and reapply often.
